You Only Live Once, This Is How I'm Doing It!

Back in the states

I am beyond exhausted. After almost 12 hours of traveling I am finally at my sister’s house in California. It was a fairly easy trip. I was worried after I got out of customs at Denver airport because I only had an hour until my flight to Fresno was scheduled to leave. That wouldn’t have been so bad but I had to go through security again. I made it just in time though and it was a fairly non eventful flight. Sorry for all the quick updates. Hopefully I’ll have time to put together a real post in the next day or two. Good night!

Flew first class down to beautiful Cancun. What a way to start the trip. Every minute since then has been fabulous. I spent eight hours soaking up the sun today. It´s just heavenly here. I can´t believe how gorgeous it is. I can´t wait to post pictures. I´m on a public computer so this can´t be any more than a quick update. I just wanted to make all of you painfully jealous really quick before I go grab another delicious dinner. Adios!

Off to Cancun

I’m off to Cancun. This is my first time flying since I went on leave in June. JUNE! What?! Yeah, I know it’s crazy. Anyway, I’m so excited to get away, relax and enjoy the sun. I don’t know if I’ll have Internet access while I’m there but if I do I’ll try and post an update. If not, see you in two days!

Birthday Weekend Extravaganza: part two

*Long post, lots of pictures. You’ve been warned.*

My birthday weekend is complete. It was a lot of fun. At the end of part one everyone was hanging out at the hotel, relaxing or taking naps.

Melvin, Anthony and Jordan napping on one couch.

David tried to teach Joel some Xbox 360 shoot-’em-up game on the other couch.

I won’t share the other pictures of almost everyone else sleeping in different areas of our rooms. I’m pretty sure they’d kill me. After everyone got their beauty sleep most of us headed over to Joe’s Crab Shack for dinner. My dad and Bekah stayed behind because they weren’t feeling well.

I ordered a “shark bite” which was not only delicious, it was fun to play with. Yes, my mom is biting my hand in the background.

Here is a much more normal picture of my mom and me. See, we’re totally not crazy. Really.

Anthony was “coloring” using Joel’s hand to hold the crayon.

Anthony is such a little flirt. Here he is dancing with the waitress.

Happy mommy and son.

Anna and Jordan were being silly.

It was my first time at Joe’s and my first time eating crab. I didn’t know how to do it. Once I figured it out, yum!

Since it was my birthday I got to be the center of attention for a few minutes. I might have loved it.

My little brother was the camera man so it’s a little jerky but you get the idea.

After dinner we enjoyed another night of swimming, hanging out and playing games.

Group shot!

I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday weekend.

30 by 30

I turned 24 today. I’m officially in my mid twenties now. Weird. I have so much I want to accomplish in my life and I figure it’s about time I write it down as a list of goals. Putting them out in public will help hold me accountable, plus I have a real tangible reminder to look back on so I can see how far I’ve come. I figure 30 is a good round number and a good age. So here is my list (in no particular order) of 30 things I want to accomplish by my 30th birthday:

  1. travel to India
  2. become a mother
  3. speak another language fluently
  4. read all books on Time 100 best novels list
  5. run a marathon
  6. sky dive
  7. go skiing
  8. celebrate 10th wedding anniversary (This will be April of the year I turn 30)
  9. visit every US state
  10. see all movies on Time 100 best movies list
  11. have a habit of exercising daily (at least 30 minutes)
  12. knit or crochet an item of clothing
  13. make a quilt
  14. earn an award with Phoebe
  15. take a painting class
  16. join a book club
  17. take a photography class
  18. have a recipe box of at least 100 things I like to cook
  19. eat some type of local delicacy (ie. insect)
  20. memorize Deuteronomy
  21. complete a scrapbook
  22. do the splits
  23. dye my hair something other than it’s natural color
  24. go scuba diving
  25. visit the grand canyon
  26. keep a blog or journal daily for one year
  27. drive across the country on route 66
  28. milk a cow
  29. ride a horse on a beach
  30. one mile on a hippity hop

I’ll be updating as I make progress. Wish me luck!

Birthday Weekend Extravaganza: part one

We’re halfway done with our stay in the hotel and we’re having a blast! Here are a few pictures of the weekend so far.

My mom was really serious about snacks. I’m not sure she knows we’re only staying two nights and not an entire week! Haha.

Melvin and Anthony relaxing and enjoying the giant tv in the room.

Yay, for birthday weekends!

Happy times.

Wouldn’t be my family if we didn’t have a good card game or two.

Despite having the worst cards ever I still had fun.

Took a trip to Ikea and had Swedish meatballs, of course. Yummy!

Um, I’m actually not sure what that is. I’m fairly positive it’s not wine.

Little buddy is tired.

Which brings us to now. The boys are down for a nap and everyone else is enjoying some quiet time and relaxing. Once the boys wake up we’re planning on grabbing dinner, going swimming in the incredibly warm swimming pool and then playing some more games.

Hope you’re all having a great weekend too. I’ll update more when the weekend is over. *smile*

I am so excited for the next couple of weeks. They are going to be amazing. This is my rough schedule:

Friday 15th and Saturday 16th: Hotel all weekend with my family. Nice warm pool, lots of shopping and nothing to do but relax and enjoy each others company.

Sunday 17th: My birthday! Woo hoo!

Monday 18th or Tuesday 19th: Off to Cancun, Mexico with my friend Kelly to enjoy margaritas, beaches, relaxation and girl time.

Wednesday 20th or Thursday 21st: Leave Cancun and head to California to see my sister.

Thursday 21st – Thursday 28th: Quality time with my sister, nephew and brother-in-law in California. More mild weather, and relaxation with people I love.

Friday 29th – Sunday 31st: Down to Indianapolis to visit friends. Also, attending a monster truck rally for the first time.

I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Brain Ache

This is both awesome and nauseating at the same time. Not in a, it’s gross way but in a motion sickness kind of way. I kind of love it. I found it easier to play in “night mode” because the picture distracted me. Try it out and tell me if it makes your brain ache too.

What’s the big deal?

If you know me well you know I’m not embarrassed easily. This is because I am incredibly cool and never make a fool of myself. Not! Actually, I learned early on that it’s much better to laugh at yourself when you do something ridiculous. You know when people ask you what your most embarrassing moment is? I have a really hard time coming up with one. When something uncomfortable happens I generally just laugh it off and move on with my life.*

This is why I have never understood something. Why are people embarrassed to buy certain products at the drug store? Now I can kind of understand if you’re buying, say, Imodium or Beano (and if you are, bummer, so sorry). I don’t understand trying to hide condoms or tampons though. Here is my thinking.

1. Condoms: Um, hello! Someone is getting lucky. You should put the box on the top of your basket and walk around with a big ol’ smile. Good for you. Either you’re in a committed relationship where you know you’re going to use them or you’ve got a date and you’re optimistic. Either way, high five!

2. Tampons: Now, not many ladies I know are trying to bury their Playtex in the bottom of their cart. Some guys on the other had act like you just asked them to hand in their man card. The way I see it, if you’re obviously a man then it’s obviously not for you. So you’re either A. in a committed, loving relationship and you’re doing your significant other a favor or B. a really sweet friend/son/brother. Either way you come off looking like a super nice guy.

I’m lucky. Joel has no problem being a sweet and loving husband and getting me what I need for that time of the month. The other day was one of those times where I was running low and asked him to stop on his way home and grab me a box of tampons. That was all he needed so he took the box up to the register to check out. When the cashier started to put it in a plastic bag he stopped her and said he’d just carry it out since that was all he got. The lady smirked at him and said “Honey, if you want to carry this box out without a bag, you go right ahead.” like he was out of his mind.

It didn’t bother him though and we both got a giggle out of it when he got home. Plus, Joel knows that doing thoughtful things for me (see number 2) means using more of other things (see number 1). And that, my friend, is nothing to be embarrassed about.

*Now I have surely jinxed myself and will have a mortifying experience in the near future. Greaaaat.

The one where you say “Aw!”

In mid December the temperatures dropped well below zero (-20 for you Celsius people). It was cold. It was too cold for me, much less our tiny little five pound puppy. She was not impressed with standing out in the cold to do her business, especially when there was perfectly good carpet to pee on in a warm apartment. That made me less than impressed. In order to make the cold more bearable for Phoebe (and life more bearable for me) we went out and bought her this little getup.

Those boots are a size XXXS by the way. They’re as small as they come and they’re still a little big on her. *giggle*

After she got used to walking in her little outfit she went back to peeing outside and I stopped looking for a new home for her. I’ve gotten a little flack for dressing up my dog like this but if it’s between being teased and cleaning up puddles on my carpet a couple times a day it’s not a hard choice.

Thankfully the temperatures have stayed in the bearable range (Above zero. Wow, when did that become bearable? *shakes head*) but we’ve gotten a lot of snow. It’s funny watching Phoebe in it now that she’s more used to it.

She likes to stick her nose in it. I don’t know if she likes the feeling or if she eats it. Either way it’s kind of funny seeing her with her little snow beard.

Look how deep it is on her. It’s actually even deeper than it looks here but she’s so light she doesn’t sink all the way to the ground. And yes, we did throw her in a deeper part of snow to see how she’d do. We’re big meanies but she lived.

This is the look she gives us when she’s all done doing her business. It means “Take me back in the warm house as fast as possible please.”

This I have only included because she looks like a little bitty puppy model with that far off look and hair blowing in the breeze. Isn’t she pretty?

Alright, I have enough cute pictures of Phoebe in the snow. How many days until it’s finally spring?
